“Getting a good night’s sleep is vital
for our health and wellbeing.”
Just one bad night’s sleep can affect our mood, concentration and alertness and longer term sleep deprivation is linked to a number of serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression and other chronic diseases.
Experience poor quality sleep on a regular basis
Research by The Sleep Council UK revealed that the majority of Britons (70%) now sleep for seven hours or less per night and more than a quarter (27%) experience poor quality sleep on a regular basis. An increasing number are now getting by on just five-six hours per night and nearly half of us lose sleep as a result of worry and stress.
This problem is a global issue with the USA stating that insufficient sleep is a public health problem. It is estimated 50-70 million US adults have sleep or wakefulness disorder. Sleep insufficiency may be caused by societal factors such as round-the-clock access to technology and work schedules. Sleep insufficiency is linked to motor vehicle crashes, industrial disasters, and medical and other occupational errors.

Should I consult with my doctor before I start yoga if I have any health concerns?
I always recommend that if you have special health concerns to consult your Doctor before attending starting Yoga.
Please take responsibility for your own body, only you know if a posture is right for you. If you become tired or uncomfortable, release from a posture and rest on your mat.
Will this course work for someone older?
This course is designed for all ages and abilities. Remember to listen to your body during yoga practice and rest if you need to.
What should I wear and do I need any special equipment?
Please dress in loose comfortable clothes and you will need to be barefoot for the yoga posture practice. Your temperature may vary so layers are recommended. You may wish to wear something warm for Yoga Sleep and you can always use a blanket & pillow to make yourself fully comfortable.
You will need a yoga mat for the yoga posture class.
I am really stiff, I am not too sure yoga is for me. Do you have any advice?
If you are stiff, you are not alone. So many years of our lives we are sitting at a desk, driving in a car, or standing on our feet all day long. The weight of gravity and the weight of our worries can cause a lot of tension and stiffness in our physical bodies. By practicing Yoga, we stretch, lengthen and sometimes go into positions that we never thought we could, in order to bring relief and strength to the short, tense muscles in the body.
Regularity and patience are absolutely necessary to stretch out tense and stiff muscles, but over time the body can really change and feel lighter, brighter and much more relaxed. Most of us don’t start out flexible when we go to a Yoga class, and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, so try not to compare your progress, your body, your postures or anything with anyone else. You are practicing Yoga for you; it is your journey, your process, your body and your mind.
The more introspective and patient you are with yourself and where you are with your Yoga practice today, the more beneficial the practice will become for you.
Do I need to complete the final relaxation on the Yoga Asana Video?
It is not recommended to leave before the completion of your practice. The video includes a final relaxation (savasana).
Savasana is an important aspect of the practice. Most of us live incredibly busy and hectic lives. It is wise to take at least a little time at the end of our practice to assimilate the soothing benefits we have accrued during the practice. It’s the best bit, don’t miss out!
I am pregnant, can I do this course?
As with any exercise during pregnancy, you should always get the green light from your clinician before starting Yoga. Yoga Sleep is completely safe in pregnancy provided you are in a comfortable position to relax. The general belief is that it will make you more aware of your body, cope with tiredness and lack of sleep, reduce stress & anxiety. All of this will help you to stay positive throughout your pregnancy. After your baby is born, you can practice Yoga Sleep when your baby sleeps, either to de-stress yourself or to overcome other worries.
When will I start to see the benefits?
This course is a positive step to making lifestyle changes. With regular practice you will promote more restful sleep, lower your blood pressure and reduce stress levels. The more you invest in your wellbeing, the greater the positive results.
